Meet the host – David Croft

It’s amazing where a conversation leads. One minute you’re talking about Formula 1 in a bar in Las Vegas, the next minute you’re in a commentary box in Bahrain. Unlikely but true, after years of following Formula 1 from the comfort of his sofa, one little chat, plenty of hard work and a lot of luck later David became BBC’s motor racing commentator at the start of 2006. A position he held until the end of the 2011 season when he left the BBC to join Sky Sports as their new F1 commentator.

Which means that Crofty can be seen and heard at every Practice and Qualifying Session, plus every Grand Prix from Australia to Brazil and all points in between, on Sky Sports F1 HD where he will be starting his third season in March. David was born and bred in Stevenage but now resides a little further up the A1 in Bedfordshire with his wife Vicky and their children. David’s broadcasting work has also seen him commentate on and present World Championship Darts for both BBC Television and Sky Sports. He was the Setanta boxing commentator, covering Joe Calzaghe’s last bout against Roy Jones Jnr at Madison Square Gardens. He’s also reported for BBC Radio 5-Live from the 2002 World Cup and 2004 Olympic Games, and provided commentary for the 2007 Superbowl in Miami. Last year he was even asked to provide the name and voice for Lofty Crofty, an airship, in the Disney animated movie ‘Planes’. Something which went down very well with his two young boys. David has hosted the Comet Sports Awards since the very beginning and has a long association with sport in Comet country after beginning his journalistic career covering Stevenage Borough before joining BBC Three Counties Radio in 1996.
